Hi,

I am getting ready to change the fuel filter in my truck for the first time. It is a DD60 11.1L. It has the filter mounted in a clear vertical housing and has a petcock at the base. Is there any trick to doing this job? I don't know exactly what the procedure is for purging the air and don't want to end up with a truck that won't run.

Thanks in advance. I am a rookie with this thing and don't know much about it yet.

Fred

I have the davco 382 wich is most likely the same set up you have. it is real easy. you take off the top small plastic cap, then drain all fuel out of bottom drain valve, until you no longer see it in dome. then you remove the bottom large plastic collar. take filter out & wipe off metal housing where filter sat. be sure to remove the rubber gromet from bottom of old filter, as sometimes they stick to the housing. the new filter will have a new seal gromet on it. replace both rubber -o- rings, small on top cap & large one under large cap. make sure to take large cap off & clean area where the new large o- ring will go. tighten large cap & fill filter housing with clean diesel or as I do fill completely with lucas fuel treatment & pour the rest into the tanks. I have always seen a big improvment in m.p.g. & faster starting when I do this. though I do this only when I service truck & change filter. I never had a problem with air, ever. look close on your drivers side of engine, near valve cover to the back of the head. if you have a prochek. a small aluminum round cylinder type with 2 small fuel lines going to & from it, you wont ever have to worry about air in your system. it takes care of that for you. after putting it all back together, truck should start right up. I love this set up cause it has only one filter, cheaper than 2 & you can see when to change it. it is good the open the drain valve once a week just to let a once or 2 out. if any contaminents or water is present, it collects at the bottom & will drain out. if you have a wire going to it like mine that is a hot wire that is hot when key is in on position. it always warms fuel. in the winter it is priceless. they sell a special wrench to take caps off. can get at freightliner or truckpro. freightliner dealers get get any part you need for that system, or you can do like myself & order direct from co.

Hi Heavyhaulerss,

Thanks for a great step by step breakdown on the job. I have printed that and saved it as I know it will prove quite valuable. I am going to take your advice and order the tool direct. I have never drained that before so I will do that job right away and remove any contaminents.

All the best,

Fred

I should of been more clear on buying the tool used to remove collar & cap. I got one free from a driver who I helped one day. the parts I ordered direct was the back check assembly. the tool should be bought at truckpro or freightliner. sorry for the inavertent error. while I am here... if you ever pour diesel fuel in your davco & it does not fill up, like happened to me one time, that is a fuel back check problem. after poring in over a gallon & watch it go down, I took loose the back check & found a very small peice of metal foil lodged in between the ball & the spring allowing the fuel to go back into the tanks. this only happened once in over 11 years. so watch if & when adding additives not to peel off the seal near the fuel tanks while the caps are off. I am sure that's where mine came from.

Hi,

That is very interesting what you said about the ball and spring being jammed. My filter case used to always have diesel visible through the sightglass and now it never does. The level would rise over time. I am thinking since I no longer see diesel in there that my ball and spring may be jammed also. I will take a look for that.

Thanks Stump on the info on the tool. I will head over to the Freightliner dealer tomorrow and buy one.

Thanks guys, you are a great help to me!

Fred

that could aslo be due to an air leak in the system. one of the -o- rings or collar. if you see air bubbles in dome while truck is running it is air leak. this would not be caused by the back check. i.m.o. contrary to some, if air is leaking from sys, truck will not shut off. it will just leak & not fill up dome. I had one such leak, went 400 miles til I got home & recleaned everything & put back together. sometimes a tiny peice of particle dust can get on the -o- ring & cause air to get in. if you can fill dome with out it draining all the way down completly, I would say it is a air leak & not a back check prob. and ...while I am here again... now on the type filters. if you use detroit diesel they will take a few to several thousand miles to start to show thru dome. however if you use donaldson it will start to build up much sooner. I use donaldson. it cost twice as much but filters twice as good. than's why it fills up quicker. always keep a spare & loook at the part number on what ever filter you do use & store it in your cell phone book. this way if ever out on the road & in need of one, you will have the part number for anyone to cross refererence for a number of available filters. do the same for your water, oil, rear filt. have the number handy, so when you call you can say I need part number xyz instead of I need a filter but not sure what kind. I have more info in my cell on parts than do I have phone numbers. one time I had air bag go out. had tools to replace but had to get one first. ever try to read the numbers off a ole air bag? not easy. while replacing one long time ago I kept info, when I needed one, I had the part num I needed as to get the part delivered the first time. by the way, if your near some truck parts stores they will bring part out to you, lot cheaper than a service truck. so any part you replace, look at receipt & store part num & mfg of part, baldwin, napa, e.t.c. this way it can be cross referenced in case they dont stock your particular brand. try to buy one of several air valves all over your truck or a leveling valve with out proper part number. this is the best advice I can give on prevantative maitenence besides replace the part before it fails.

I added a davco 382 to my truck last year and love it.I took off the stock detroit filter setup and just use the Davco. I have been buying my filters at freightliner here in Charlotte,NC they have the best price I have found and I keep 2 or 3 in the truck for spares just in case I need them.

I bought donadson for years cause that is what they sold at truckpro, until on day they were out. I went to freightliner wich is only 1 block away & they had the detroit diesel brand for about 1/2 the price of the donaldson, so I bougt a few, over the years I have switched back & forth. every time the detroit filter would go 35,000 miles or more before needing changing. the donaldson would go about 14,000-16,000 & at times 9,000 before needing changing. my conclusion is donaldson filters better raising the fuel level quicker.also the reason for the higher price. I still use the detroit filter or other's when donaldson is not available, but in winter months I use only donaldsonI want the best water seperator filter I can get. I know most are not convinced on additives, but next time you change your filter, fill all the way up with lucas fuel treatment instead of diesel fuel & pour the rest in tanks & see if you notice any difference. I have every time.
